The Science of the Upstate Food Shed;

Safety, Security, Accessibility

“The Science of the Upstate Food Shed; safety, security & accessibility” features research-based insights related to food safety, security, abundance and related policies.

Our program’s objectives include:

1)      Convey the importance of a safe secure food supply to those raising, distributing and consuming food.

2)      Describe the implications to those in the food chain from farmers to consumers the recently passed Food Safety Modernization Act.

The result of this program will be a higher level of understanding, generating greater interest and establish a higher importance level for our area’s ‘food shed’ New York’s ’Breadbasket.’

Actionable information will be presented relating to food safeguards, and their implications to our food system.’

Urbanized is a feature length documentary about the design of cities featuring the world’s foremost architects, planners, builders and thinkers. The film takes a look behind the scenes at cities both expanding and shrinking in terms of the housing market, public space, economic development and more. Visiting a broad range of urban design projects around the world, the film sheds light on what a city of the future may look like. Urbanized is the third installment of Hustwit’s film trilogy including Helvetica and Objectified.

Stick around after the screening to take part in the post screening panel which will discuss the urban development in the Rochester community. The panel will include Wayne Goodman, CEO of the Landmark Society, Mike Governale, Interactive Art Director at Partners and Napier, Jonie Monroe, Executive Director at the Rochester Regional Community Design Center, Michael Philipson, Principal and Founder of the Philipson Group and Friends of the GardenAerial and Richard Perrin, Executive Director of the Genesse Transportation Council. Tickets can be pre-purchased for ten dollars before the event and are twelve dollars at the door. Visit www.greentopiafestival.com/greentopiafilms/urbanized for more information about Urbanized and to purchase tickets.

GENESEE VALLEY REGION FRUIT AND VEGETABLE STUDY

Cornell’s Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management is asking for all fruit and vegetable producers in the following 9-county region to participate in a survey:  Genesee, Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, Orleans, Steuben, Wayne, Wyoming, and Yates counties. The overall project is funded through the Genesee Valley Regional Marketing Authority and NYS Department of Agriculture and Markets and is managed through Cornell Cooperative Extension Wayne County.

Stories from buyers and growers alike describe unmet demand for some products.  This project will help determine where production opportunities exist. It will examine trends in fruit and vegetable production, where production flows to, what expansion is being planned, and what the challenges are for expansion of fruit, vegetable and small grain production in the  your 9-county region. This will help us inform potential buyers about general fruit and vegetable production in your region and inform policy makers about activities that would encourage production. It will also help us match research and Extension activities to meet your needs.

Please help by contacting Kristen Park, (607) 255-7215 or ksp3@cornell.edu for a copy of the questionnaire. If you are on an Extension mailing list, please watch your mailbox for a questionnaire and please complete and return it. If you have any questions, contact us. We are happy to answer any questions you may have.
